1993 THOROUGHBRED GELDING, 16.3H
(Fast Passer xx-Fun n Dance xx/
Buckpasser xx)
Bue (Jockey-Club registered name Achey Blackey, ugh) came to Copper bay Farm from Texas as a seven-year-old with an old soul in 2000. I was in between horses as Specter was retired early and Tarzan was only a two-year-old, so when I spotted this Thoroughbred gelding for sale on the internet he looked like a kind and fun horse to work with. He is an excellent teacher - if you ask him correctly he will do half pass, leg yields and shoulder-ins with ease. Sit the wrong way and you get nada. He was started in piaffe before I bought him and so it was wonderful to get to feel that from a more experienced horse.
Unfortunately we discovered he has EPSM (Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy), a muscle condition that results in an excessive buildup of glycogen in the muscle. In the normal horse, glycogen is the energy source in muscle contraction. An EPSM horse cannot complete this process, which results in the excess in stored glycogen. This results in muscle cramps and weakness. He is quite
comfortable for low level work when kept
on the proper high-fat diet, but could not
consistently maintain himself without soreness
once we were schooling Third Level or so.
With two other horses to ride, he is living the
retired lifestyle as Tarzan's pasture buddy.
Bue's Pedigree
As he was originally bred for the track, Bue's bloodlines contain some well noted Thoroughbred influences including Native Dancer, Man O'War and Villamor.
Every once in a while he lets the inner Thoroughbred out in a gallop around the pasture, but mostly it's a very good thing he never made it to the starting gate. He's been known to get passed by a Hanoverian or two coming down the stretch. :-) |
